Valentines Day Black Forest Smoothie
Love at first sight!
We all know that the way to a mans heart is through his stomach and that chocolate is a girls bestfriend (at least until diamonds become edible). So, with this in mind, we set ourselves a challenge to create the perfect Valentines Day treat!
The result is this decadently delicious and surprisingly simple Black Forest smoothie. By deconstructing the much loved black forest gateau and combining the classic chocolate and cherry combo with our trusty blender, we created a treat guaranteed to be a hit with your better half!
- 1 cup of frozen cherries
- 1 cup of almond milk
- 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder
- 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup of rolled oats
- Cup of crème Fraîche
- 1 Dark Chocolate bar [Optional]
Making the smoothie
Place 1 cup of frozen cherries, 1 cup of almond milk, 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder and 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder into a blender and blend until smooth.
Using 1/4 cup of rolled oats, begin by sprinkling a small amount of oats into the mixture and then blend. Continue adding small amounts of oats stopping to blend and taste until your preferred consistency is achieved. The addition of rolled oats offer a thicker and creamier consistency, one which you can tailor to your own taste.
[Optional] Add whipped crème fraiche - To whip the crème fraiche, ensure it is well chilled before hand, then add to a chilled metal bowl and whisk until soft peaks form. This should offer a thick and light textured consistency.
Add a thin layer of crème fraiche to the top of the smoothie and set aside in the fridge to cool. When it comes to decorating your smoothie, let your imagination run wild! Using a combination of layering and various chocolate detailing (see below) we created this messy but delicious concoction!
Decorating your smoothie
This simple yet effective step adds a delicious finish to your smoothie! Simply grate your bar of dark chocolate and sprinkle over the top of the smoothie. Finish with a few cherries on top!
Using the bar of dark chocolate, break the chocolate bar into small pieces and add to a heatproof bowl.
Pour a small amount of boiling water into a saucepan and gently heat until simmering to create a bain marie. Suspend the heatproof bowl over the simmering water ensuring the base of the bowl does not touch the water. Stir frequently until the chocolate is almost completely melted then remove from the heat. Any remaining chocolate lumps will continue to melt off the heat.
Place a baking sheet on your work surface and pour the melted chocolate onto the sheet spreading it into a thin layer. Leave to set until the chocolate sheet is firm but not solid. Hold a pallet knife 45 degrees to the chocolate surface and push away from yourself to create a thin chocolate curl. Continue until you have a handful of decorative curls and set aside in the fridge to chill and harden.
Chocolate dipped cherries
Using the same method as above, dip fresh cherries into the melted chocolate and set aside on a baking sheet. Add to the fridge to harden.
